Lighting layers: why one ceiling light is never enough
Good rooms use three layers of light at different heights, each on its own switch.
Ambient light fills the room, task light helps you work, and accent light gives the room depth. When all three come from the ceiling, the room feels flat.
Put lamps at eye level and wall washers near art. Keep colour temperature consistent across fittings, around 2700 to 3000 K for homes.
Every layer should be dimmable. A room that can go from bright to soft in one touch will be used much more.
